Coffee filter-paper sizes explained
Match exact brewer and filter codes across V60, Melitta, Chemex and AeroPress with a source-backed compatibility crosswalk.

Size numbers belong to a brand's filter system, not a universal cup standard.
A machine's maker-size “cups” are often much smaller than UK mugs.

The fastest way to buy the wrong paper is to search “coffee filters” without the brewer model. Filter geometry affects how the paper sits, how water drains and whether grounds escape around an edge. The printed cup count is not a universal sizing language. Start with the make and model on the brewer, then match the manufacturer's filter designation.

The crosswalk joins manufacturer brewer descriptions to their stated paper formats. It reveals two useful exceptions to visual guessing: V60 02 and Switch 02 share a paper size despite different brewing workflows, while Melitta Look V Timer and Optima Timer use different paper designations despite both making a batch into a jug. Cup count therefore does not determine the paper size. Product revisions and alternate accessories exist; the exact brewer manual wins.
When a packet's title is vague, use this order: read the model on the brewer, find its filter designation in the manual, match the full designation on the packet, then check the count and colour. A 100-pack code tells you how many sheets are supplied; it does not make the paper fit a different brewer.
V60 01 versus 02
Hario's 01 and 02 are different cone sizes. A size-02 V60 dripper takes size-02 papers, whether you brew one cup or a larger serving within its capacity. The V60 Switch size 02 also uses size-02 V60-shaped papers. If you have a size-01 brewer, buying 02 because “my mug is big” is the wrong logic. Read the number on the dripper or packaging.
The white VCF-02-100W is a 100-sheet example in the catalogue. Bleached versus natural/brown paper is a separate preference; fit the paper first. Rinsing is a common way to seat the filter and remove loose paper taste, using the manufacturer's guidance and safely discarding the rinse water.
Melitta 1×4 and 102
Both are folded, trapezoid-style formats, but the designation matters. The Look V Timer specifies 1×4, whereas the Optima Timer model in our catalogue specifies 102. Do not treat machine marketing such as “8 cups” or “10 cups” as a filter code. Read the holder and the manual. Batch filter machines can also differ in basket shape despite a similar jug size.
Chemex bonded filters
Chemex's classic six-cup vessel uses its bonded paper system. The folded square or circle creates multiple layers at the spout; place it according to Chemex's instructions, rather than dropping a V60 cone into the neck. AeroPress standard and XL
Standard AeroPress paper micro-filters are small circular discs for the standard cap. The 350-count pack in our catalogue is the standard size; it is not an XL refill. The manufacturer also sells a different metal disc and XL-size supplies. Check your exact AeroPress model and cap before reordering.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fold a larger filter to fit a smaller brewer?
Improvised folds can block flow or open a path for grounds. Matching the correct size is a cheap and reliable first fix.
Does “four cups” mean four mugs?
Usually not. Manufacturers often mean smaller maker-size cups. Use the brewer's millilitre capacity and your own mug size to plan a batch.
Are paper filters universal?
No. Even when two cones look similar, the angle, height or folded seam can differ. Prefer the manufacturer's stated format.
