Coffee-machine cleaning checklist for real homes
A realistic daily, weekly and periodic care checklist for espresso, bean-to-cup, filter and pod machines, with safe model-specific exceptions.

Stop for leaks, damaged electrics or unexplained faults.
Coffee-machine care becomes easier when it is attached to use, not to an ambitious monthly deep-clean. The table below is a set of reminders; the exact washing temperature, detergent, dishwasher permission, tablet and descaler come from your model manual. Never immerse the machine body or open an electrical casing.
After every use or at the end of the day
| Equipment | Quick task | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Manual espresso | Clear puck; rinse or wipe basket and portafilter; wipe accessible group rim; empty tray | Hot parts, coated finishes and manual's flush instructions |
| Steam wand or milk carafe | Wipe/purge or run milk rinse immediately; clean food-contact parts | Exact milk-system diagram and burn risk |
| Bean-to-cup | Empty grounds drawer and tray when prompted; run automatic rinse as specified | Removable brew unit instructions; some are not user-removable |
| Filter machine | Discard used grounds and paper; wash basket and jug as allowed; dry before storage | Glass handling and hotplate cool-down |
| Pod machine | Eject used capsule, empty capsule bin and tray; wipe outlet as allowed | Capsule mechanism and hot-water caution |
Do not leave wet grounds enclosed overnight where they can stale and soil the next drink. If a part is dishwasher-safe, that permission applies to the exact part and model, not everything detachable.
A weekly inspection
Look at the accessible shower screen, basket holes, filter basket, jug lid, water tank and tray. Clean visible coffee residue using the approved brush or cleaner. A grinder belongs on its own dry-care schedule; see how to clean a coffee grinder. Clean and dry storage surfaces so fresh beans and filters stay away from splashes.
For an espresso machine, the full cleaning guide explains why backflushing is model-dependent. A bean-to-cup removable brew unit may require a rinse, lubrication or no user removal; follow the maker's exact instructions. An automatic milk system can have a separate deeper cycle and approved cleaner.
Periodic jobs: let the machine lead
Coffee-oil cleaning uses a model-supported cycle and product where specified. Sage's Barista Express manual separates its cleaning cycle from descaling. Descaling treats mineral deposits in the water route; set its interval from local water hardness, filter use and machine prompts. Follow our descaling overview and frequency guide for the decision process.
Replace a compatible water filter when due, using the correct model and reset step. Inspect seals only where the manual permits. If a tray overflows, a cable is damaged, water enters the housing or a fault code persists, pause use and contact manufacturer support rather than intensifying the cleaning solution.
A simple record to keep
Note the date of the last cleaning cycle, descaling cycle, water-filter change and any unusual symptom. A four-line phone note is enough. It tells you whether a warning is new, whether a rinse may have been missed and what to tell support. Do not use a record to override a new machine alert.
Frequently asked questions
Is a weekly descale part of this checklist?
No. It is a periodic model- and water-dependent job. An unnecessary chemical cycle is not better care.
Can one product clean everything?
No. Coffee oils, milk residue and mineral scale are different materials in different machine paths. Use the exact approved supply for each.
What if I cannot find the manual?
Find the model number and use the manufacturer's current support page. Avoid copying a neighbouring model's button sequence or dismantling instructions.

Supplies for distinct maintenance jobs
Sage's tablets clean oils in compatible group-head cycles; De’Longhi EcoDecalk and Melitta filter-machine powder target scale in their respective supported machines. They are not interchangeable.
SCC201NEU0ZEU1, six tablets
- Six tablets
- Group-head cleaner
- SCC201NEU0ZEU1
Cleans coffee oils, not limescale
Sage Group Head Cleaner
Best for: compatible Sage espresso machines with a supported cleaning cycle
Sage’s own group-head cleaning tablets for listed compatible espresso machines. They target coffee oils in a cleaning cycle; they do not replace a mineral descaler.
Why it earns a place
- Official Sage supply
- Specific cleaning purpose
- Six-dose pack
What to weigh up
- Not a descaler
- Compatibility varies
- Cycle differs by model
Skip it if You are trying to remove scale or your model has no compatible cleaning cycle.

- DLSC500
- 500ml
- Descaler, not detergent
For supported De’Longhi machines
De’Longhi EcoDecalk
Best for: De’Longhi owners whose manual specifies EcoDecalk
De’Longhi’s own 500ml descaling liquid for supported coffee machines. Follow the machine’s dose, water fill, cycle and rinse instructions rather than treating the bottle as a universal recipe.
Why it earns a place
- Manufacturer-backed for supported models
- Liquid format
- 500ml bottle
What to weigh up
- Not a universal cleaner
- Model-specific dosing
- Must be stored securely
Skip it if Your machine specifies a different product or you need cleaner for coffee oils rather than mineral scale.

For filter machines
Melitta Anti Calc Filter Machine Powder
Best for: compatible filter coffee machines and kettles, especially Melitta models
A portioned powder sold for filter coffee machines and kettles. Use only in a compatible machine, mixing and rinsing exactly as its instructions and the machine manual require.
Why it earns a place
- Portioned sachets
- Designed for filter machines
- Maker publishes instructions
What to weigh up
- Not for every machine type
- Irritant handling precautions
- Still requires full rinse
Skip it if You have a bean-to-cup or espresso machine requiring its own descaler.

Sage's manual demonstrates distinct cleaning and descaling procedures; De’Longhi's pump-machine FAQ shows model-programme and hardness considerations. This checklist is intentionally cross-model and defers all chemical and disassembly specifics to the current manual.
