The best pod machine is the one whose capsules make the drink you actually want. A low machine price means little if you dislike the available coffee or buy two capsules for each favourite recipe. Before choosing a colour or compact cabinet, pick your drink style and find the ongoing capsule supply in shops you use.
Original: Essenza Mini
The De’Longhi EN85.B is a narrow machine for Original espresso and lungo capsules. It is an efficient choice for one or two short coffees and a cramped counter. The 0.6L tank means frequent refills if several people use it. Milk requires a separate frother; a “milk coffee” recipe on a capsule box does not make the machine steam milk. Vertuo: Vertuo Pop
The ENV90.B reads Vertuo capsules and supports six cup sizes, including options much longer than a traditional espresso. Nespresso lists a 560ml tank. Check mug clearance as well as machine height: a large cup can be awkward under a compact spout. Vertuo is not a way to use an existing Original capsule collection. The machine has no integrated milk system, so milk equipment is a separate decision.

Multi-drink: Dolce Gusto Piccolo XS
The EDG210.B uses the Dolce Gusto ecosystem, not either Nespresso system. Its manual lever is straightforward, but read the individual recipe pack: some milk drinks have a coffee capsule plus a separate milk capsule. That can double capsule consumption for a drink, and the milk is not fresh steamed milk. This route suits someone attracted to the system’s broader hot-drink menu, not someone seeking a fresh-bean flat white.
Milk-first pod route: Creatista Plus
Sage’s Creatista Plus uses Original capsules and adds an automatic steam wand with adjustable temperature and texture. It is the most credible capsule route here for a fine-textured milk drink, but it is a substantial machine purchase and the wand and jug need care. If you are willing to grind beans, compare its full setup cost with a manual espresso machine or an automatic bean machine.
Ownership checklist
Count capsules per finished drink, not per pack illustration. Multiply that by your weekly cups and current capsule price. Include any milk accessory, descaler, storage and delivery. Choose by the drink, then test the recurring purchase
If you mainly want a short black coffee, Original is a focused starting point. If you want a longer capsule coffee, compare the actual Vertuo cup sizes and capsule choices against the size of your mug; do not assume a longer button produces the same drink as a brewed filter pot. Dolce Gusto's broader menu can be useful in a mixed household, but read whether a favourite milk drink uses two capsules. The Creatista route buys a more involved milk texture, not freedom from the Original capsule format.
Before buying the machine, choose two coffees you would happily replenish, check their current price per capsule, and calculate a normal week. For example, one capsule per drink across seven drinks is seven capsules; a two-capsule recipe doubles that count before milk and electricity. This is a quantity example, not a price promise. Then compare tank capacity, used-capsule bin, cup clearance and the space for storing the next pack. A cheap machine that needs a capsule you cannot readily obtain is a poor bargain.
Finally, check the care path for the exact model: how to empty the used capsules, clean the outlet and tank, and respond to a descale prompt.
