Nespresso Original vs Vertuo: which system fits your coffee?

If you choose a Nespresso machine by its purchase price alone, you may discover that the coffee you want is in the other capsule system. Original and Vertuo differ in brewing method, capsule shape, drink-size range and ongoing purchasing. Neither is universally better. Decide whether your everyday cup is a short espresso or a longer mug first.

The compatibility rule

Original capsules are for Original machines; Vertuo capsules are for Vertuo machines. Nespresso explicitly describes them as distinct technologies and says Vertuo machines use Vertuo capsules only. Neither format fits Dolce Gusto. Check the full system label when shopping, not just “Nespresso compatible” in a headline. Third-party Original-compatible capsules exist, but compatibility claims must be checked for your specific machine; do not assume the same choice exists for Vertuo.

Extraction and cup style

Original uses a high-pressure extraction system and is oriented to ristretto, espresso and lungo. A lungo is a longer capsule extraction, not a 250ml filter coffee. Vertuo reads the capsule barcode and uses rotational Centrifusion to set the brew. The range includes espresso and larger cups, but the supported sizes depend on the individual machine. Nespresso lists six for the Vertuo Pop ENV90.B; do not transfer a seven-size system-wide claim to that model. Crema appearance differs, but appearance alone cannot prove a cup will taste better to you.

Match the named capsule to the intended drink

Nespresso's UK capsule guide publishes these nominal formats. A machine's supported range and programmed volume still need checking; a cup-size label is not a promise that two formats contain the same amount of ground coffee.

The 110ml and 150ml drinks are not directly equivalent. Nor does pouring hot water through an Original capsule repeatedly create a Vertuo mug; choose a recipe you enjoy, then price that recipe. The Essenza Mini makes espresso and lungo, while the Vertuo Pop's available cup formats depend on its exact machine specification.

Milk drinks are a machine question too

The basic Essenza Mini and Vertuo Pop have no steam wand. Add a milk jug frother for a quick cappuccino-style drink, or select a model with an integrated milk system if its upkeep suits you. Sage’s Original-system Creatista Plus uses an automatic steam wand, so “Original cannot texture milk” would be wrong. A flat-white setup depends on milk texture as well as the capsule base.

What costs less?

There is no stable universal capsule price. Take the current price of the specific sleeve you would buy, divide by capsules in it, then multiply by capsules per drink. Some larger-cup capsules may cost differently; promotions, subscriptions and delivery can alter the total. Add a frother if needed. For example, assume an Original capsule costs 55p, a Vertuo espresso capsule 65p and a Vertuo mug capsule 75p. These are invented inputs for a worksheet, not shop prices. At one drink every day:

For the short-coffee pair, the illustrative difference is £36.50 a year. For those specific long-cup recipes it is £127.75 a year in the other direction. A single Original capsule with added water would change the maths again. These recipes use different coffee quantities and extraction, so price per millilitre cannot decide which tastes better. Substitute your actual sleeve price and capsules per finished drink; include delivery, milk and machine purchase separately.

A simple decision

Pick Original if you want mostly short coffees, value the compact Essenza Mini route or want the Original-specific machine and capsule range. Pick Vertuo if you want capsule-made longer black coffees and accept its separate capsule supply.
