Coffee grinder not grinding fine enough for espresso?
Find out why the finest grinder setting still makes fast espresso: basket type, burr assembly, adjustment range, beans and sensible upgrade options.

Use the same beans, dose and target beverage yield for a fair comparison.
A pressurised basket may give a practical route without espresso-fine grinding.
Never adjust burrs past the maker's limits or while the unit is energised.
Espresso capability requires *adjustability* as well as a small particle size.
A grinder can produce visibly fine powder yet still fail at espresso. The practical question is whether it can make small, repeatable adjustments around the setting that gives a pleasant shot in your basket. A filter grinder may jump from fast and sour to stalled; a blade grinder produces an uneven range of pieces and has no controlled setting at all.
Diagnose in five steps
- Identify the basket. In a pressurised basket, a restricted outlet supplies some resistance. Single-wall baskets depend much more on the coffee puck. Read the basket comparison before judging the grinder.
- Measure dose and yield. A low dose or long programmed beverage can look like a grind-range problem. Use the basket's supported dose and weigh the cup. Follow the fast-shot guide for the full decision path.
- Check the coffee. Very old pre-ground beans can respond differently from fresh whole beans. Do not change bean and grind on the same test shot if you want a clear result.
- Check the grinder's own instructions. Some upper burrs can be mis-seated after cleaning; some makers provide a supported calibration step. Unplug the unit and follow only its manual. Do not improvise shims or force burrs into contact.
- Decide whether the design has an espresso range. Baratza explicitly gives the Encore ESP an espresso-focused fine zone; the ordinary Encore is a filter-led choice. Similar names do not mean equal espresso suitability.
If the grinder is capable but recently became worse, clean retained coffee and inspect removable parts according to its manual. Replace damaged burrs only with the maker's correct parts and instructions. If performance fails after supported maintenance, use warranty or service support.
Buy, hand-grind or keep the forgiving basket?
If you love the current milk drink and do not want a new daily task, continuing with the machine's pressurised basket is legitimate. If you want fresh-ground single-wall espresso, an electric espresso grinder suits repeated drinks and shared households; a capable hand grinder can lower upfront cost but adds effort for every dose. Our espresso grinder shortlist compares the distinct routines. Allocate the money in the full setup-cost guide before purchasing.
Do not “fix” a filter-focused grinder by buying a 58mm portafilter or forcing extra coffee into the basket. Neither creates fine adjustment, and incompatible accessories can damage the machine. Likewise, a pressure gauge reading cannot substitute for measuring dose, yield and taste.
Frequently asked questions
Can I recalibrate the grinder myself?
Only if the manufacturer documents the procedure for your exact model. Disconnect power and follow those instructions. Otherwise seek support.
Does a dark roast need a different setting?
Often. Bean density, age and roast affect flow. Re-dial after changing coffee, one step at a time. Do not assume a single setting works forever.
Will a more expensive espresso machine fix a coarse grinder?
Not with a single-wall basket. The grinder is part of the extraction system. A pressurised basket changes the tolerance, but a machine price increase alone does not make coarse grounds adjustable.
