Espresso-machine dimensions for a real kitchen
Compare two exact espresso-machine footprints with a separate grinder, then measure the working access each setup needs.

Confirm dimension order on the maker's exact UK specification.
Add side room for the steam wand, handle rotation and tamping.
Check overhead clearance for tank and grinder access.
Measure cup-plus-scale height at the drip tray.
A 15cm-wide machine can become a half-metre-wide habit. On a normal worktop you also need a grinder, a place to dose and tamp, a milk pitcher or cup, access to the water tank and a cloth. This is why a “compact” product page should trigger measurements, not close the decision.
Three dimensions and four clearances
Measure your free width × depth × height at the exact counter position. Include wall sockets, splashback and overhead cabinet. Then check four working clearances: (1) the portafilter handle has room to rotate; (2) the steam wand can move into a jug; (3) the water tank can come out or be filled without sliding the machine unsafely; (4) a cup on a scale can fit under the spouts.
Sage lists its Bambino Plus as 19.4 × 36.2 × 30.4cm in width × depth × height order. De’Longhi lists the Dedica Style EC685.M at 149 × 330 × 305mm; verify the maker's ordering for the exact market listing, but its narrow 149mm width is the standout fact. Published figures are appliance dimensions, not a safe-use envelope. The Stilosa is wider at about 205mm.
Put the same grinder beside each machine
To make the comparison consistent, pair each body with the Baratza Encore ESP, for which Baratza publishes a 13 × 15 × 34cm body (W × D × H). The summed widths below are two appliances touching side by side on paper—a lower bound, not a recommendation to place them that close in use.
| Model + Encore ESP | Body widths added | Deepest body / tallest body |
|---|---|---|
| Dedica Style EC685.M (14.9 × 33 × 30.5cm) + grinder | 14.9 + 13 = 27.9cm | 33cm / 34cm |
| Bambino Plus BES500 (19.4 × 36.2 × 30.4cm) + grinder | 19.4 + 13 = 32.4cm | 36.2cm / 34cm |
The Bambino pairing needs 4.5cm more bare width and 3.2cm more bare depth in this particular side-by-side drawing. It does not establish that the Dedica fits your counter: both need a place to tamp, turn the handle, work the wand, fill the tank and load the 34cm-high grinder beneath a cupboard. Replacing the Encore ESP with another grinder changes the sum. Draw separate paper rectangles for your exact products and add all clearances required in their manuals; never infer a safe ventilation distance from this table. The small-kitchen guide compares a manual machine with a batch-filter alternative instead.
| Space to check | Why it matters | Simple at-home test |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Machine + grinder + tamping | Mark the complete arrangement with paper rectangles |
| Depth | Appliance feet and front working zone | Measure from wall to counter edge, leaving manufacturer clearance |
| Height | Cabinets and tank/hopper filling | Lift a container through the planned opening |
| Cup zone | Mug, scale and removable tray | Stack cup on scale and measure to spout |
Do not block ventilation or disregard the installation clearances in a machine's manual. Check electrical cable reach without unsafe extension arrangements.
The grinder changes the drawing
A separate grinder can be wider or taller than the machine and may need vertical space to remove its hopper or add beans. If you will switch between espresso and filter, set aside space for dosing cups, not just the motor unit. The small-kitchen coffee-station guide shows how to keep the worktop functional, and espresso setup costs covers the second appliance financially.
Make a paper mock-up before ordering
Use a sheet of paper for the machine footprint and another for the grinder; mark where the portafilter handle projects when locked and unlocked. Place a cup and scale where the drip tray would be. Imagine filling the tank and wiping the steam wand. If you cannot perform these actions without moving a hot appliance, the spot is too tight even if the published machine dimensions fit.
Frequently asked questions
Is a narrow machine always best for a small kitchen?
No. A narrow body may be deep, need rear tank access or leave no practical space for a grinder. Compare total working area.
Does the published height include the hopper?
It depends on the product and whether a grinder is integrated. Check the exact listing and manual. Leave extra room for filling and removing components.
Can I put the machine under wall cabinets?
Only if the manufacturer’s ventilation and access instructions allow it and you can fill, steam and clean safely. Measure the cabinet underside and tank path.
