V60 sizes compared: 01, 02 and 03
Compare Hario V60 01, 02 and 03 by realistic batch, paper compatibility, server size and home-kitchen use. Avoid buying the wrong filters.

Choose by grams of coffee and water, not the advertised cup count alone.
Paper 01, 02 and 03 are not interchangeable by assumption.
A larger cone does not automatically make one cup taste better.
The receiving mug or server must safely hold the intended brew.
Hario's 01, 02 and 03 are dripper sizes, not litres or cup measurements. The maker describes roughly 1–2, 1–4 and up to 6 small cups respectively. Your 'cup' might be a 180ml breakfast cup or a 350ml mug, so those marketing ranges cannot replace a recipe. See how to make pour-over for a measured 15g/250g one-cup baseline.
The quick size map
| V60 size | Maker-size capacity | Typical home role | Paper to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | 1–2 small cups | One compact cup | V60 01 |
| 02 | 1–4 small cups | One mug or two moderate servings | V60 02 |
| 03 | Up to about 6 small cups | Larger shared batch | V60 03 |
The 02 is broadly forgiving as a purchase because you can brew 15g/250g for one or 30g/500g over a suitable server for two. It does not mean the extraction is inherently superior to the 01 for a solo cup. The larger 03 gives room for more grounds and water, but needs a larger receiving vessel, enough kettle water and more counter space. Do not fill the cone above its paper rim.
Why paper sizes are worth checking twice
The clear plastic V60 02 in our catalogue is matched to Hario size-02 papers such as VCF-02-100W. An 01 paper will not cover the wall of a 02 properly; a larger paper can fold oddly in a smaller cone. Either can encourage bypass or awkward pouring. Hario also sells Switch brewers in numbered sizes, and its size-02 Switch uses 02 papers, but always check the actual model. Chemex bonded and Melitta machine papers are different systems entirely. Our filter-paper guide keeps the formats straight.
Some listings use old or regional part codes, material and colour variants. Check the size on the brewer body or packaging and the number on the paper pack, not just 'for coffee dripper' in an Amazon title. If you buy a starter set, confirm whether papers are included; bare cone listings often do not include a useful supply.
Is plastic, ceramic or glass the better size choice?
Material is separate from size. A plastic 02 is light, inexpensive and requires little preheating. Ceramic and glass can feel more substantial, but are breakable and demand more care with temperature and storage. Buy a material you will use daily; do not upgrade solely because it looks professional. The pour-over maker guide compares an ordinary V60 with the valved Switch and Chemex; those are workflow decisions rather than just sizes.
For two mugs, use a server large enough for the finished coffee and a scale that can bear the full load. Coffee retains some water; 500g added water does not become exactly 500ml in the server. The ratio chart can scale coffee and water, then you can adjust grind and pour for the deeper bed. If you regularly need a litre, a filter machine may be less effort than repeatedly filling a 03.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make one cup in a V60 02?
Yes. It is a common, flexible choice. Use a one-cup dose and matching 02 paper.
Can I use V60 02 papers in a V60 01?
Do not assume so. They are cut for different cone sizes and may fold or seat incorrectly.
Is size 03 best for two people?
Usually a 02 is sufficient for two moderate servings. A 03 is useful when your actual measured batch needs more headroom.
Does a bigger V60 brew faster?
Not by size alone. Grind, bed depth, paper and pour pattern influence flow; compare at a fixed recipe rather than a fixed clock time.
