When to replace coffee-grinder burrs—and when to clean first

Burrs are wear parts, but home grinders often run for years without a prescribed replacement date. A sudden change in flow or flavour deserves diagnosis, not an immediate purchase. Bean age, roast, dose, basket, calibration, retained coffee and a clogged chute can all alter the result. The sensible order is clean, compare, inspect and only then replace the part if the evidence points there.

Symptoms that justify a closer look

You may need to grind increasingly fine for the same coffee and recipe, experience a persistently uneven grind, notice unusual grinding noise, or see a chipped cutting edge. A sudden inability to grind fine after a hard foreign object may indicate damage rather than normal wear. Start with a repeatable baseline: note the bean, roast date, dose, grind setting and brew time. Use the same beans on several brews. Inspect only what the manual makes user-serviceable

Switch off and unplug an electric grinder. Let it stop fully. Open the hopper and remove the upper burr or carrier only as the maker instructs; some assemblies are not designed for casual disassembly. Brush dry residue away. Look for a visibly chipped edge, a cracked carrier, missing tabs or an adjustment ring that fails to seat correctly. Do not judge wear by whether a burr feels razor-sharp to a finger; avoid touching cutting edges. Do not use water on a motor housing or reassemble damp parts.

If your model has a calibration or shim procedure, follow the maker's exact directions rather than moving burrs until they touch. A rubbing metal sound is a stop-and-check signal, not a “zero point” to force through. Incorrect reassembly can itself make the grind inconsistent.

Repair or replace the grinder?

Find the exact spare-part number and service procedure. Baratza says it supplies burrs and other components for repairable models. Compare the cost and availability of the correct burr or carrier with the value and condition of the whole grinder. Replace an affected part if the maker supports it and the rest is sound; a new grinder is a separate decision if the machine has multiple faults or no parts support. Do not fit a same-diameter generic burr without confirmed compatibility and alignment.

A commercial café's throughput estimate should not be transferred directly to a home grinder. Burr material, design, roast, bean volume and maintenance differ. The meaningful test is whether your cleaned, correctly assembled machine still meets your brewing needs.
