Espresso basket and portafilter sizes explained

“Does a 54mm basket fit my espresso machine?” is not answered by the number alone. A portafilter is a handle with a metal head that locks into a particular machine group. The removable basket sits inside it. A tamper must fit inside the basket, while the handle's ears or lugs must fit the group. Those are different interfaces.

The common nominal sizes

The manufacturer and model must overrule this shorthand. Sage's Bambino Plus specifies a 54mm portafilter; Gaggia's Classic E24 specifies 58mm. Neither statement makes their baskets or handles universally interchangeable with every other machine using that nominal diameter. De’Longhi's compact Dedica accessories need exact EC685 compatibility checked in the EC685 documentation.

What exact model evidence actually proves

The same nominal diameter can describe a whole handle, a removable basket or a funnel that clips to the rim. We cross-checked the maker's named machines and named accessories rather than treating the number as a universal key.

The striking case is the two Sage rows: both machines are described as 54mm, yet Sage's SP0024799 handle page specifically names the Bambino Plus, while its dosing-funnel page describes a broader 54mm rim use. That is not contradictory; a funnel, basket and locking handle engage different surfaces. Buy the part using its own compatibility list and the machine's complete model number. For Gaggia, an official Classic-specific bottomless holder is stronger evidence than an unqualified “58mm fits all” listing. The Dedica maker's spares advice tells owners to use the model number.

Measure the job, not only the metal

Basket capacity: a “double” is not a universal 18g basket. Manufacturers and specialist basket makers publish intended dose ranges or heights for their specific parts. Coffee density and roast also change how much headroom a dose occupies. Overfilling can press the puck into the shower screen; underfilling may change resistance. Start from the supplied basket and manual, then measure dose before experimenting.

Tamper fit: the tamper face should cover the coffee bed without sticking in the basket. A nominal 54mm system does not mean every tamper labelled 54.0mm is right for every tapered basket. Check the maker's fit guidance. Portafilter fit: matching basket diameter does not prove the handle's lugs engage the machine. Look for the exact machine model on a reputable product compatibility list, and confirm return terms if buying an aftermarket part.

A safe five-step buying check

1. Photograph the machine's rating/model label and locate its manual.
2. Identify the original handle and basket part number, not only the outside diameter.
3. Confirm the replacement's group compatibility, basket rim, depth and intended dose.
4. Check that your tamper and grinder suit the new basket.
5. Fit and lock the empty, cool handle gently according to the manual; stop if it does not engage normally.

Is a 58mm basket better than a 54mm basket?

Not inherently. It can broaden accessory choice in some systems, but it does not guarantee flavour. Grind, dose, extraction and ease of use remain central.

Can I use a larger double basket to make a stronger shot?

Only if it fits the handle and group and your machine supports it. Strength also depends on the beverage-to-dose ratio. A larger basket is not a substitute for controlling yield.

Should I buy a bottomless portafilter first?

Usually not. Learn the supplied equipment and solve grind and distribution first. A bottomless handle can reveal uneven extraction but also spray hot coffee and must fit precisely.
