Paper vs metal coffee filters

The paper-versus-metal question is really two questions: what texture you prefer and whether the filter physically belongs in your brewer. A paper disc for an AeroPress, a V60 02 cone and a Chemex bonded sheet are not substitutes for one another. What paper changes
Coffee paper traps much of the fine sediment and some oils, usually leaving a clearer cup. It is especially convenient in an AeroPress: press, eject the compact puck with paper and rinse. In an open V60, paper also becomes part of the flow path; thickness, seam, fold and how it sits against the cone can change drawdown. Rinsing is sensible when the brewer requires seating and preheating, but not every recipe or filter needs the same treatment.
Paper is a repeat purchase and produces used filters, though a compact 350-pack of official standard AeroPress discs lasts many single cups. Match standard versus XL before ordering. What metal changes
A stainless mesh or disc can be washed and reused. Larger openings relative to paper may let more coffee oils and fine particles into the drink. That can create a richer mouthfeel and a little sediment, especially with very fine grounds. The official AeroPress standard stainless filter is 316 steel and fits the Original and Go, not XL. It is a clean example of how to compare material while keeping the brewer the same.
Mesh is not a one-off, maintenance-free purchase. Rinse it immediately, periodically clean lodged oils and grounds according to its instructions, dry it, and inspect for damage. Very fine screens can clog; coarser mesh may leave more sediment. A reusable cone insert is not guaranteed to mimic the paper cone's flow, so expect to adjust grind and pour. A fair cup-to-cup comparison
Brew the same coffee with the same dose, water amount and roughly the same time in the same brewer, switching only the compatible filter. Taste once warm rather than piping hot. Ask whether you prefer clarity, body and cleanup, then refine the grind if flow changed. For cold brew, a mesh basket is convenient for a pitcher, while a paper pass after steeping can polish an especially silty batch. Filter slowly and in manageable amounts. For pour-over, most readers should begin with the maker's intended paper and only change material after learning a repeatable baseline.
Cost and waste without false precision
Metal avoids a new disposable disc each brew but takes water and cleaning effort; paper costs per cup vary by pack and seller. A cost calculation needs your real purchase price and brewing frequency, not an evergreen promise that one option is cheaper. If you already own a paper system and brew occasionally, changing filters may save little. If you make several AeroPress cups a day, a reusable disc may be worth considering for texture and convenience.

Does a metal filter make stronger coffee?
It may feel fuller because more oils and fines pass through, but strength also depends on coffee dose and water. Keep the recipe fixed when comparing.
Can a metal AeroPress disc fit the XL?
The standard disc listed here does not. Check the brewer generation and size before buying.
Do paper filters remove all sediment?
They commonly produce a clearer cup, but damaged, badly fitted or bypassing paper can still let particles through.
Is unbleached paper better?
Colour by itself is not a reliable taste ranking. Correct shape, paper quality, flow and your preference matter more; rinse if recommended.
